Re: Slogans & phrases for the Twelve Steppers...
High Bottoms (feeling like you can't continue using, but haven't lost everything imaginable yet) have trap doors (bottom falls out from under you because you use again, seeing as how it wasn't THAT bad and you hadn't lost EVERYTHING yet).
Compulsive Overeaters frequently have high bottoms. And trap doors.

Lori, I don't get that. (?)
I didn't lose anything, so my bottom was pretty high, I guess.
But I chose to get clean and stay clean.
Does that mean I have a higher chance of relapse?

I don't know of any studies that have coorelated relapse rate with "amount of misery and disaster prior to getting clean".
In my OPINION people who seek recovery before losing everything may have a higher chance of relapsing because the RISK involved in using again is not as high.
For example someone on probation, with kids in the CPS system, who is monitored randomly and risks losing their housing and their children MAY be more likely to "say no" when the thought of using comes up due to the sheer amout of stuff they will lose if they use again and get caught.
That doesn't mean they won't relapse. Just that if they do, they have very heavy consequences for doing so.
Someone who has a job that doesn't drug test, has a home that is not at risk of being taken away, is not on probation or parole, who's children never were involved with CPS *MAY* not have as many IMMEDIATE consequences for using again.
Every person's "bottom" is different. Some people reach the point where they have had enough of the negative consequences that drug use comes with before losing everything.
Sometimes, like for you (I think) the "bottom" was not a physical one. You weren't homeless and desperate. But FOR YOU there were other consequences of your use that were bad enough for you to seek recovery.
For some people, the bottom never comes, and they die an active addict.
